This is not a motivational book. This is not a vendor pitch. It's the real story of what changed when selling cars went digital — and why becoming a digital retailer takes more than tools. It takes alignment between process, culture, and execution.
“Digital retail didn’t replace sales. It exposed who never had a process.” — David Farmer, Becoming a #DigitalRetailer
The Core Idea
Fifteen years inside automotive retail and building the technology behind it taught me the same lesson, over and over.
Digital retail didn't fail. Leadership did.
Process beats personality every time.
Speed builds trust. Confusion kills it.
Customers didn't change. Expectations did.
Technology only works when accountability exists.
Why I Wrote It
Everything in this book comes from real experience — the sales floor, the desk, general management, and years spent building dealer technology and OEM programs from the inside. The gap I kept running into was never really between customers and dealers. It was between the tools dealerships were buying and the process required to actually use them. This book is the mistakes made, the lessons learned, and the hard truths uncovered navigating that gap in real dealerships, in real time. The principles apply no matter which website provider or platform you run — which is exactly why the same thinking became the foundation for how we built intice.
From the Book
— David Farmer, on why digital retail stalls in dealership after dealership, no matter how much software gets added.
